Why You Should Get Isolaz

Posted in Laser Acne Treatments by . | Leave a Comment

With all of the acne treatments available, why you should get Isolaz treatment can be confusing.  Is the Isolaz treatment better than Photodynamic Therapy?  Is the Isolaz better than a facial?  It is important to understand how the Isolaz acne treatment works, in order to determine whether it is a good treatment for your acne.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, “The Isolaz acne treatment is a very effective treatment that works by two  simultaneous mechanisms.  The treatment combines a gentle vacuum, to clean out the clogged pores, with an anti-bacterial broad-spectrum light to kill the acne causing p. acnes bacteria.  When patients ask me if the Isolaz is better than a facial, I explain to them to added benefits of an anti-bacterial light and that the Isolaz treatment is far superior than a facial.  However, for patients with very clogged pores and comedonal acne, we sometimes use a combination of medical facials and Isolaz treatments for the optimal treatment.  Every patient is different, though nearly all acne patients benefit from treatment with the Isolaz.”

The Isolaz is a great treatment for all patients with acne, because it combines two different treatments in one.  At the Clear Clinic, we often recommend combination treatments, in order to give you the best and most effective treatments based on the needs of your skin.  The Isolaz, while it is excellent as a stand-alone acne treatment, is often combined in a series of treatments with Photodynamic Therapy and LED Light.  For patients with comedonal acne, rather than inflammatory pimples, we often combine the Isolaz with medical facials and chemical peels.

FAQ About Acne: Sunscreens and Creams for Acne Prone Skin

Posted in Uncategorized by . | Leave a Comment

What sun screens do you recommend for acne prone skin?

It is important for patients with acne-prone skin to use a sunscreen that is labeled “non-comedogenic” or “non-acnegenic.”  Some acne medications and in-office treatments make your skin more sun sensitive, so it is important to use sunscreen regularly

What sorts of creams should be avoided in acne patients?

Acne patients should take care to use only creams for acne that are labeled non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic.  Occlusive ointments, like Vasoline, should be avoided on acne-prone skin.

FAQ About Acne: Exfoliation and Acne

Posted in Acne At Home Treatments by . | Leave a Comment

Do you recommend exfoliating for patients with acne?

Gentle exfoliation can be helpful, as it removes excess oil, dirt and grime from the pores.  Be careful not to over-exfoliate, as this can lead to inflammation and irritation on the skin.

What is the difference between a chemical exfoliation and a physical exfoliation?

Physical exfoliation involves physically scrubbing the skin with an abrasive material, in order to remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface.  Examples of physical exfoliators are loofahs and microbeads.  Chemical exfoliation uses ingredients like glycolic acid or salicylic acid to loosen the dead skin cells, so they are released from the skin’s surface.

Ask the Acne Expert

Each week, the acne experts at Clear Clinic answer questions from patients. This week’s question is about atrophic acne scars, which are scars that appear on the skin as indentations due from loss of tissue.

Question: What is the best way to treat indented scars left over from active acne breakouts?

Answer: An atrophic (indented) acne scar like the ones pictured on the left will respond beautifully to treatment with a Fractional CO2 laser.  Fractional CO2 lasers work by using laser energy in tiny columns to penetrate the skin and stimulate collagen renewal.  The result is the production of healthy collagen, which will soften the appearance of this atrophic scars.  Most patients will see 50-75% improvement of atrophic scarring after one Fractional CO2 laser treatment and the improvement is permanent. We also recommend the F.A.S.T. Laser treatment for acne scars. In the latest issue of New Beauty magazine, F.A.S.T. was featured as one of the best new treatments to treat acne scars. Clear Clinic’s founding dermatologist, Dr. Schweiger, spoke of the benefits of F.A.S.T. saying: “We are finding patients with focal acne scars are doing unbelievably well with a single F.A.S.T. treatment, and are not having pigmentation problems.”

Treating Post-Pimple Redness

Posted in Laser Acne Treatments by . | Leave a Comment

Once a pimple has resolved, it would be nice to forget about it completely.  Unfortunately, this is often not the case, as residual redness (called post-inflammatory erythema) tends to stick around after acne clears.

Here are options for treating post-pimple redness:

  • KTP laser: the KTP laser is a vascular laser, used to remove redness from the skin.  Its energy is absorbed in the red blood cells of the skin and it breaks up the superficial collections of vessels that lead to the appearance of red marks on the skin.  The KTP laser is also used to treat rosacea, blood vessels, and brown spots.
  • Laser Genesis: the Laser Genesis uses a unique type of laser to decrease the appearance of red on the skin.  The painless treatment also improves the texture of the skin and shrinks pores.
  • Photofacial: IPL photofacials also remove excess redness from the skin.  A series of treatments will improve post-pimple redness, without any downtime.
  • Isolaz acne treatment: the Isolaz acne treatment uses a broad spectrum light to kill the acne-causing bacteria, but this broad spectrum light also decreases the red marks on the skin.
  • Topical medications: Topical prescription medications, like retinoids and azeleic acid, can produce a small improvement in post-pimple redness.  The improvement is not as dramatic as any of the laser treatments, but provides a good option for those patients who are unable to make it into the office for treatment.

Many in-office laser and light treatments prevent post-pimple redness as they fight acne.  Treatments light the Isolaz and Photofacials can be performed for the treatment of active acne, but will simultaneously prevent redness on the skin from forming and treat post-pimple redness that is already present on the skin.

Why Football Players Get Acne

Posted in Laser Acne Treatments, Teenage Acne by Clear Clinic. | Leave a Comment

Believe it or not, football can actually cause acne.  Well, not the act of playing football itself, but the equipment worn while playing the sport.  Dr. Schweiger explains that, “There is a condition called acne mechanica that is often seen in football players.  Football players often visit us complaining of new acne on their forehead and chin during the season.  Acne mechanica is a specific cause of acne that comes from occlusion and rubbing on the skin, in this case from their football helmets and chin straps.  Football players get acne as a result of clogged pores from their equipment.”

There are ways to prevent and treat acne mechanica during the football season.  Immediately after practice or a game, it is important to wash with a medicated salicylic acid cleanser.  This will help to unclog all of the sweat and debris from the pores that built up while wearing your helmet.  If washing with salicylic acid cleanser doesn’t produce improvement in acne that is already present, it is important to visit the Clear Clinic for acne treatment.  Prescription medications, such as benzoyl peroxide, topical antibiotics, retinoids, and even oral antibiotics, can be very helpful in the treatment of acne in football players.  Acne mechanica can also respond very well to an in-office treatment called the Isolaz.  The Isolaz uses a gentle vacuum to clean out the pores, while simultaneously delivering a broad-spectrum light into the pores to kill the acne-causing bacteria.  A short series of Isolaz treatments can jump start treatment of acne mechanica.  For players that experience acne mechanica during every football season, we recommend having regular treatments during the season to prevent the development of acne.

FAQ About Acne: Types of Acne and How to Use Acne Medicine

Posted in Acne Tips by . | Leave a Comment

Are there different types of acne?

The main two categories of acne are inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne.  Inflammatory acne is what is traditionally thought of as “pimples” and cysts.  Inflammatory acne lesions can lead to scarring.  Non-inflammatory acne lesions are blackheads and whiteheads, officially open and closed comedones.

Do I have to use my anti-acne medicine every day?

Not necessarily – all acne creams are meant to be used in a unique way.  Some creams must be applied every day, while others are used 2-3 times weekly.  Your anti-acne regimen is specific to your skin; you will receive instuctions from your dermatologist as to how to best use your anti-acne medicine.

How to Treat a Sudden Pimple

Posted in Acne At Home Treatments, Adult Acne by capacitr. | Leave a Comment

Pimples can come up suddenly – usually the day before a major event!  Luckily, there are a few ways to treat a sudden pimple before it interferes with your plans.

How to treat  sudden pimple:

  • The best treatment for a sudden pimple is to stop by the Clear Clinic for a cortisone injection.  Call either Clear Clinic location for a quick cortisone injection visit, during which we will inject a small diluted concentration of a medication called triamcinolone.  Triamcinolone is anti-inflammatory and can flatten out a pimple within twenty four hours.
  • Isolaz laser acne treatment can be performed during the cortisone injection visit, to help flatten the unwanted pimple and prevent new pimples from coming up.  The Isolaz treatment combines a broad spectrum anti-bacterial light with a gentle vacuum to clean out the pores.

The Best Acne Prescription for Sensitive Skin Types

Posted in Uncategorized by Clear Clinic. | Leave a Comment

Treating acne when you have sensitive skin or eczema can be extremely tough. Most of the ingredients that are proven acne-fighters, such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and alpha hydroxy acid will only cause further irritation to your already inflamed skin. Finding an effective acne treatment that is gentle on your skin is key in fighting acne breakouts and eczema at the same time. Enter the acne prescription topical cream Tretin-X.

Made with a low dose of tretinoin, an effective retinoid, and formulated in an elegant cream, Tretin-x is a great option for those acne patients who want to treat their skin with kid gloves. When dealing with sensitive skin and acne, there are other key points to be aware of:

  • Do not use any other medicated cleansers of creams while using a topical retinoid. Steer clear of other products containing salicylic acid, sulfur or benzoyl peroxide. It’s also very important to use an SPF while on Tretin-x or any other topical retinoids, as they make the skin especially vulnerable to the sun.

What Causes Adult Acne?

Posted in Adult Acne by . | Leave a Comment

Adult acne can show up anytime after your teenage years; some people experience adult acne during their twenties, while others experience adult acne much later in their lives.  Dr. Schweiger notes that, “Acne can occur at anytime.  We most commonly see acne in teenagers, because of increased sebum production due to changes in androgen levels that occur during the teenage years.  However, adults also experience hormonal changes, and other factors that can cause the development of acne.”

Women with adult acne often experience hormonal acne that shows up on their chin and along their jawline.  For women who are not trying to conceive, medications such as oral contraceptive pills and spironolactone help to block the androgenic hormonal influence that lead to these breakouts.  Both women and men who experience adult acne can benefit from in-office laser and light-based treatments that help to clear acne quickly.  Treatments such as Photodynamic Therapy and the Isolaz acne treatment address multiple factors that lead tot the development of acne in adults.  For adults with active social lives and numerous work commitments, it is important to explore the fastest and most effective acne treatment options.

Other treatments for adult acne include prescription medications, such as oral antibiotics, topical antimicrobials, and topical retinoids (which are also anti-aging!)  Some patients with severe, recalcitrant adult acne benefit from a course of isotretinoin (commonly known as Accutane) therapy.  It is important for adults experiencing acne to visit the Clear Clinic for prompt treatment of their acne; delaying the treatment of adult acne can result in permanent scarring.
