When Should I Have Fillers for Acne Scars?
If laser treatment for acne scars is the most effective method of permanently improving the skin’s texture, then why would anyone opt to have fillers for acne scars? Acne scar expert Dr. Schweiger explains that, “Laser resurfacing works by stimulating the skin’s own collagen production to fill in areas of deep acne scars. While this process is permanent, it takes a while to produce the full improvement in the skin’s texture. Some improvement is seen quickly, within one to two weeks, while more dramatic improvement can take up to four months to appreciate. Additionally, there are between two and seven days of downtime (depending on the laser treatment used) after a laser resurfacing treatment. For patients who either cannot schedule any downtime or for patients who need to see instant improvement of acne scars, dermal fillers are the best option.”
Dermal fillers, such as Restylane or Juvederm, are injected directly into the pitted acne scars. These fillers are composed of hyaluronic acid, an ingredient natural to the body, which fills in atrophic skin of the pitted acne scars. The improvement in skin texture can be appreciated immediately, though sometimes there is very mild swelling after the injections. Dermal fillers for acne scars last between six and twelve months.
