What are chemical peels?
Chemical peels are in-office treatments performed in dermatology practices in order to improve fine lines, hyperpigmentation (brown spots from old acne), sun damage, melasma, active acne and acne scars. The peeling agent is applied to the skin for a few minutes in order to remove the superficial layers of the skin, to improve upon the issue being addressed.
What is a Jessner’s Peel?
A Jessner’s Peel is a solution combining resorcinol, lactic acid and salicylic acid in order to treat both acne and the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (brown spots) left behind from old acne lesions. It is performed as a series of treatments in the office, generally at one month intervals. The amount of Jessner’s Peels required for each patient depends on the skin type and condition being treated.
Are Jessner’s Peels safe for all skin types?
Jessner’s Peels are safe for all skin types. These in-office chemical peels can be tailored to treat all skin types and skin colors safely. Many patients with darker skin types experience a type of acne scarring called “post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation” that appears are brown spots that remain after the acne lesions have cleared. Jessner’s Peels are a safe and effective treatment option for these patients.
What should be expected during and after my chemical peel visit?
Prior to having a chemical peel, such as a Jessner’s Peel, the skin is cleansed with soap and water. Acetone is then applied to the skin in order to remove the outermost layer of the skin (the stratum corneum) prior to applying the Jessner’s Peel. The peel is then applied to the skin and left in place for between one and ten minutes. The Jessner’s Peel is then deactivated and removed with water. Sunscreen will be applied to the treated area prior to leaving the office and you will receive an instruction sheet to refer to in the days following your Jessner’s Peel. You may experience some redness on the day of your Jessner’s Peel, but actual peeling generally doesn’t start until at least the second day after the peel. Some patients never experience peeling; these patients can still expect to see great results from the Jessner’s Peel.
