Acne and Vitamin A

Posted in Acne At Home Treatments by Clear Clinic. | Leave a Comment

Vitamin A for AcneVitamin A has proven to be an effective acne-fighter when used in both oral medications, such as Accutane, and topical treatments like Retinoids, both of which are vitamin A derivatives. Why is it that vitamin A derivatives are key in the fight against acne and not natural vitamin A? Pure vitamin A is beneficial in maintaining optimal skin health for normal skin, but when an irregularity, such as acne, comes into play very large doses of vitamin A must be used, which can make it toxic. The vitamin A derivative used in Accutane is water soluble and can be safely administered in high doses. While eating a diet rich in vitamin A, such as carrots, sweet potatoes and kale, will help the overall health of your skin it is not effective at treating your acne.

Acne Bumps in the Beard Area

Posted in Adult Acne by . | Leave a Comment

Our male patients often tell us that they are growing their beards longer in order to prevent acne in this area.  Many males find that shaving closely causes acne bumps.  So what is a professional male, who needs to shave regularly, to do?  Dr. Schweiger explains that, “This is a condition called Pseudofolliculitis Barbae.  When curly hairs reenter the skin and the hairs irritate the hair follicle, these inflammatory shaving bumps resembling acne begin to form.”

Dr. Schweiger recommends an after-shave lotion called “Tend Skin” for patients who experience pseudofolliculitis barbae.  Often, adding this product into your shaving regimen is enough.  When its not enough, prescription medications can be prescribed.  Topical antibacterial medications, topical retinoids, and even oral antibiotics are sometimes prescribed to treat pseudofolliculitis barbae (aka shaving bumps.)

Top Acne Mistake: Not Seeing the Dermatologist

Posted in Acne Scars, Laser Acne Treatments by Clear Clinic. | Leave a Comment

When you suffer from acne, it’s easy to fall into the cycle of using the same products to try and treat the problem. But if you have not seen the results you wished to have seen or are becoming depressed about your acne breakouts, it’s time to see the dermatologist. At Clear Clinic, we do not think a patient should ever have to treat their acne alone. A board-certified dermatologist will find the best acne treatment for your skin type. Chemical peels, Isolaz and Blue Light Therapy are all excellent ways to treat acne head on. One of the biggest mistakes we see patients make is waiting too long to come into the clinic. Often times, more damage is done by waiting and scars are made worse. It’s important to see the dermatologist as soon as you feel like your acne is becoming an issue that you cannot treat and control on your own.

Focus on Tea Tree Oil as an Acne-Fighting Ingredient

Posted in Acne At Home Treatments by Clear Clinic. | Leave a Comment

There are many good ingredients on the market that fight acne, including old standbys like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. One of the lesser known acne-fighting ingredients is tea tree oil. Here, 5 facts to know about tea tree oil and why it’s an effective skin treatment in the fight against acne:

1. Tea Tree Oil is an essential oil extracted from the leaves of the Australian tree, Melaleuca Alternifolia.

2. Tea Tree Oil has been shown to have antiseptic properties, which makes it effective in killing the bacteria associated with acne.

3. Studies have shown that Tea Tree Oil has fewer side effects than benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of acne, but it also takes longer to produce results.

4. Applying undiluted Tea Tree Oil to acne lesions may cause irritation. Instead, mix it with water or find an acne product containing Tea Tree Oil.

5. Tea Tree Oil should never be ingested, it has a high toxicity profile. Tea Tree Oil is only for topical use.

Acne in Men

Posted in Uncategorized by Clear Clinic. | Leave a Comment

Acne does not choose favorites, so unfortunately everyone can develop acne at some point in their lives.  It is more common in teenagers and young women, but acne commonly presents in men as well.  In male patients, acne often presents as truncal acne (acne on the back and chest), though it can occur on the face as well.  Acne treatment for male patients must be tailored to each patient specifically.  Male patients often are not in the habit of applying creams in the morning and evening, so topical medications can be burdensome.

Dr. Schweiger explains that, “Male patients, in particular, tend to do very well with in-office laser and light treatments.  Photodynamic Therapy and the Isolaz Acne Treatment are very effective for the treatment of acne and can be performed on the trunk if necessary.”

Can Green Tea Help Acne?

Posted in Acne At Home Treatments by . | Leave a Comment

Our patients often ask us if there are any home remedies for acne.  While they understand that in-office treatments and prescription medications are usually the most effective treatments, they often want to do more.  Lately, there is a lot of “buzz” about green tea and its potential effects on acne.  There is even a popular diet called “the green tea acne diet.”  Dr. Schweiger explains that, “There is no research that shows drinking green tea to influence the behavior of acne.  Acne is caused by the p. acnes bacteria, and while green tea provides important anti-oxidants that may make your skin healthier, there is no proof that drinking green tea will eliminate acne.  There are, however, recent studies showing that the application of green tea directly on the skin can decrease acne.”

A study, published in 2010, showed that the application of 3% green tea emulsion decreased sebum production in male patients.  Since excess sebum production can lead to the formation of acne, this study introduces the idea that green tea may be able to decrease acne by decreasing sebum production.  We are still awaiting more data, but green tea products are already popping up in drug stores.  At this point, we recommend sticking with your prescription regimen and gentle cleansers and moisturizers at home.  However, it may not be long before green tea becomes an essential part of every acne regimen.  Stay tuned.

Acne and Hair Products

If you are noticing that your hairline and forehead areas are breaking out, your hair products may be to blame. Many hairsprays and hair gels contain oils that may contribute to acne breakouts. Here, are Clear Clinic’s top tips on keeping your hairline and forehead clear of acne breakouts:

  • When using hairspray, shield your forehead and hairline area with your hand to prevent hairspray from touching your skin.
  • When sleeping, use a headband to sweep your hair away from your forehead
  • If you have bangs, do not use product in them.
  • Use blotting papers during the day to absorb any residual oils on your forehead.

What are Acne Scars?

Posted in Acne Scars by . | Leave a Comment

Our patients often ask us, “what are acne scars?” and “why do they develop?”  Dr. Schweiger explains that, “Inflammatory acne lesions can cause damage to the skin.  If this occurs, the skin’s natural healing process stimulates the production of new collagen fibers in the damaged area.  However, the new collagen fibers don’t form in exactly the same way as the healthy skin, which causes the appearance of an acne scar.”

The best method of preventing acne scars is to prevent acne itself.  It is important for even mild acne to be treated, before it leaves behind scarring or pigmentation.  There are many prescription medications available to use at home, though many of our patients opt to try laser and light-based acne treatments.  These in-office treatments help to eliminate acne faster and reduce the risk of scar formation.  We often recommend treatment with a combination of Photodynamic Therapy and the Isolaz Acne Treatment.

Acne scars are not dangerous, but they are certainly undesirable to most people.  One of the most common treatments that  the Clear Clinic performs is the removal of acne scars.  There are two treatments available at the Clear Clinic to decrease the appearance of acne scars:  The Fractional CO2 Laser and the Fraxel Laser.

What You Need to Know About Benzoyl Peroxide

Posted in Acne At Home Treatments by Clear Clinic. | Leave a Comment

When it comes to treating acne, one of the most widely used over-the-counter ingredients is benzoyl peroxide. From spot treatments to cleansers, benzoyl peroxide is effective at cleaning out the pores by introducing oxygen and thereby killing the  P. Acnes bacteria. It was one of the very first treatments used to fight acne. One of the downsides to benzoyl peroxide is that it can be very drying on the skin. Clear Clinic recommends alternating and using your benzoyl peroxide treatment every other night. Another important point to remember is that benzoyl peroxide can bleach fabric, so be prepared for it to bleach any pillowcases or T-shirts it comes in contact with!

Three Ways to Feel Better About Your Acne

Posted in Uncategorized by Clear Clinic. | Leave a Comment

At Clear Clinic, we take an integrative approach to your acne treatment. Meaning that, we don’t only treat the acne, we work on the full picture. During your treatment, we make sure you’re under the care of our mental health consultant Dr. Laura Curtiss Feder. Acne is closely associated with depression. And for good reason. When you are struck with a bad acne breakout, often times that the only thing you can focus on. Dr. Feder offers these tips for those times you feel as though your acne is preventing you from living your life to its fullest:

  • “Sleep well and eat right. Have fun. Keep busy. Get moving. Deficits in all of these things are associated with depression – as well as sub-optimal skin! Hit the sack early, seek well-balanced meals and find something active that you enjoy doing, whether its yoga, biking or going for a walk with a friend. The physical activity, getting your mind off of your negative thoughts as well as rewarding yourself are all likely to boost your mood,” says Dr. Feder.
  • “Talk to someone. If friends, family and others in your life you trust aren’t enough, you can also consider speaking to a professional psychologist who can help you better understand your negative thoughts and feelings and work with you on specific tools and steps to feel better,” says Dr. Feder
  • “In addition, often when people are dealing with situations that can make them feel depressed, like acne or skin conditions, they feel hopeless, helpless or not in control. While we can’t always control everything, think about small steps you can take to help yourself feel better,” offers Dr. Feder.
